Skills Ontario Competition 2022

Skills Ontario has made the difficult decision to host the 2022 Skills Ontario Competition in a remote, virtual format. After a great deal of deliberation with our stakeholders and audiences, it has been determined that this decision is what is safest and most accessible for the thousands of Ontarians we reach.

This past fall, the prospect for an in-person Competition looked promising; we surveyed representatives in school boards, colleges, and union partners who send competitors and received a great deal of positive feedback pointing to a successful return to an in-person event. However, throughout this period, Skills Ontario kept in mind that circumstances could change and planned for a virtual/remote Competition. We again did a survey in early February with the same educational partners, and quickly learned that the probability of competitors and visitors attending in-person had dramatically dropped.

Despite recent positive developments on the pandemic front, there remain many uncertainties and barriers to an in-person event, both pandemic and otherwise. In light of best available information, current circumstances and input from our stakeholders, we do not believe it is possible to host a successful in-person event given many factors beyond our control. Therefore, we have made the decision to host the 2022 Skills Ontario Competition virtually/remotely, keeping in mind that the timing of this announcement will need to be in well advance of April to give reasonable time to our attendees and competitors to prepare for the event as needed. Contests will be running on April 19th to 29th, but the Competition event experience will be open to the public on vFairs on May 3rd, followed by the Closing Ceremony on May 4th.

The Skills Ontario Competition is the largest skilled trades and technologies competition in the country. The last in-person Competition hosted in 2019 attracted over 38,000 visitors. Prior to this, Skills Ontario successfully hosted the 2021 Skills Ontario Competition remotely.

Please note that the Qualifying Competitions (to be held by virtual submission April 1st), Young Women’s Conference and the First Nations, Métis, and Inuit Student Conference (to be held May 3rd in conjunction with the Competition) and the Closing Ceremony (to be held May 4th) will be hosted virtually this year, as well. Also on May 3rd as part of the Competition, we are virtually hosting elementary workshops for grades 7 and 8.

We appreciate our advocates, participants, partners, and volunteers for their understanding during these extraordinary times. While we had hoped to be hosting an in-person Competition for 2022, we are looking forward to putting on a world class remote virtual Skills Ontario Competition and Career Exploration Showcase using the vFairs platform again this year.
