Celebrating Women at the 10th Annual Women as Career Coaches

On March 27, 2014, female students and staff members from Bishop P.F. Reding Catholic Secondary School attended the 10th annual Women as Career Coaches, hosted by the Halton Industry Education Council (HIEC).
The event served as an opportunity to celebrate women who are role models to female youth, and to inspire all women to follow their dreams through their career paths. As part of the evening, attendees were able to interact with women in diverse roles and listen to their inspirational stories. In addition, speakers and mentors provided young women with information involving the link between industry, education and community involvement.

Staff members and mentors; Rita Langill and Anne Putica, as well as the 34 Bishop Reding students were inspired by the female representatives and numerous career pathways highlighted at the event.
Speakers during the night included a welder/fitter technologist, a hair salon owner, an anthropologist studying gibbons in Thailand, and Maria Nestoras; winner of Canada’s Handyman Challenge! The evening was capped off by an appearance by Becky Kellar; four time Olympic gold medalist with the Canadian women’s hockey team, complete with all of her medals.

The Women as Career Coaches event was thoroughly enjoyed by all students and staff members representing the Halton Catholic District School Board. The overarching lesson of the night left a lasting impression, and consisted of the idea that following your passions will lead to greater opportunity. Thank you to the Halton Industry Education Council (HIEC) and our liaison; Joan Powell for organizing this amazing event!
